Minutes earlier and seven hundred miles north of The Cove, Aksell chambered another round even as he watched the vehicle still speeding away. His aim had been true, he had a clear view of the driver's silhouette, yet the anticipated crack of rear glass shattering and expected subsequent slump of the figure driving never happened. Instead, he heard the distant sound of the shot pinging off harmlessly. Protective glass? he wondered. Quickly, he cycled the bolt two more times to get the special armor-piercing ammo he wanted for the next shot. This would likely be his final chance to get the target before they were out of range.

The road that the SUV was on ended at an approaching intersection. He would wait until the vehicle slowed and turned. That should give him the optimum angle on the driver. Briefly, he considered taking out the tires, but if it had armor and protective glass, most likely it would have run-flat tires as well. He waited for the brake lights, but the SUV barely even slowed as the driver took the turn at an unimaginable speed. How had he not rolled over? Again, Aksell centered the scope, then marked the proper number of mil-stops ahead. All of this was automatic for him: the wind, the spin of the round leaving the barrel, the distance the car would travel, even the curvature of the earth factored in at this range. He squeezed the trigger and watched for the kill.

A satisfying slap as he saw the impact dead center in the passenger side window. Briefly, he saw a shadowed face turn toward him, the unharmed driver seeing the depleted uranium tipped round embedded in the window glass. A shot that would have pierced the armor on most modern tanks had been stopped by glass. Aksell nearly threw the gun down in disgust. He had failed. That was something he simply did not do. Something Control would no doubt be questioning him about shortly. He stood, shaking off the netting, and stomped angrily around the building rooftop.

“Team One, maintain your pursuit. Team Two, proceed to egress locations. Overwatch, you have new tasking instructions incoming.” Control disconnected abruptly. Aksell packed hurriedly, removed the comm device and walked calmly down the stairs of the old tenement and out the back. Still chastising himself for the miss, he was busy reviewing all the steps of the mission. Had he missed anything? The car and driver hadn’t been anticipated, but still, his moves had been correct. The mission had failed, but he hadn’t. Control couldn’t hold him personally responsible, he hoped.

Dumping his gear in the back of the old rust and burgundy Volvo wagon, he slid behind the steering wheel. He felt the smartphone buzz in his pocket. Casually, he lit a long-awaited cigarette and greedily sucked in a lung full of the toxic smoke. Cancer. He smiled again at the ridiculous thought. As he pulled the old car onto the street, he glanced at the screen on his phone.
